Description of the UCSB Network

Data networking at UCSB has three major components:

  • External Wide Area Network (WAN) connections. These connections tie UCSB to off-campus networks, including other UC campuses, Internet2, and the commodity Internet.
  • Core (Inter-Building) Backbone connections. The backbone serves to interconnect departments and provides transport to the external links. The current version of this network is known as the Next Generation Backbone (NGB) — Phase I.
  • Intra-Building Local Area Network (LAN) connections. LAN connections are typically supported at the department or division level and provide connectivity between the end-user desktop PC and the campus backbone network.

View a diagram showing these three components.
