Local Area Networks

Local Area Networks (LANs) – sometimes known as departmental networks – are commonly managed and maintained by staff at either the department or division level. Responsibilities include address allocation, physical link administration, troubleshooting, and liaison with the campus Network Operations Center (NOC).

While intra-building wiring is generally the responsibility of the occupying department, the senior campus officers have provided some one-time funding for various Intra-Building Wiring (IBW) projects. IBW projects are proposed, prioritized, selected, and funded on an annual basis.

Statistics for many departmental connections to the campus backbone are available from the NOC web page.

Work is underway to develop an online support locator tool. Meanwhile, contact your department head or MSO to identify your support provider. Should this fail, members of departments with the College of Letters and Science may visit the LSIT page, while those in the College of Engineering should contact the Engineering Computing Infrastructure staff.
