Using the above diagram, let us imagine someone sitting at a desktop computer in "Department A" using a browser to view the Yahoo home page. The browser would send a web page request across the local network within the user's building, traverse the building switch "931-b," then reach the campus backbone network at "544c-c," which would carry the request between buildings until it reached the external WAN networks. At this point the request would follow one of the several off-campus paths using any number of non-UCSB networks to reach Yahoo.
