Multimedia Production Lab

  Project:  Student Multimedia Laboratory

Sponsor:  Bill Koseluk (Instructional Computing)

Summary

A Student Multimedia Production Lab (SMPL) is needed. This request includes building 3 dedicated digital video post-production workstations based upon the Faculty Development Center prototype, upgrading the existing AT Lab in Kerr Hall (10 machines), and purchasing field production equipment.

How This Project Supports the Academic Mission of UCSB

One cannot overstate the importance of a modern computing environment for students. Campuses are widely judged by the extent and efficiency of its computing facilities. Computing has long been known to be an indispensable adjunct of education. As UCSB aspires to the highest levels, there can be no question as to the importance of a vibrant technology presence on campus. Multimedia is an interdisciplinary activity with notable practical applications in many departments campuswide.

Funding Source and How This Project Relates to It

There is no funding for these requests at this time.  Multimedia facilities will continue on campus with or without new funding, yet present supply does not meet present demand, and new demand can certainly not be accommodated.

Costs: Initial Year and Recurring

One-time expense: $120K, Annual recurring expense: $85K, which includes additional staffing required to support 3 new labs in Kerr Hall plus periodic equipment replacement in the SMPL.

Matching Opportunities

No matching opportunities are available though it is likely that various departments will supplement shortfalls in funding. Sites supporting student access will likely continue to fund computing at some level, despite present funding levels.

Staff Support Required

See Costs, above.

Existing Resources to Be Used

Replacement costs refer to existing facilities, so space is a significant resource which will remain available. While new resources are requested (i.e., staffing), there are various infrastructures in place which can provide support to new staff, equipment and funding.

Project Timeline

There is no timeline for this. Once funded, these functions would be ongoing.

Life Cycle of Result

Would continue indefinitely, contingent on continuance of funding.
