Job Description of the OIT Director

 

Reports to: Executive Vice Chancellor

The Director of the Office of Information Technology:

Is the campus leader on information technology. Has overall responsibility for the Office of Information Technology. Is the leader in developing plans and budgets for the campus's information technology infrastructure and for the integration of information technology into its research and instructional activities. Has overall responsibility for the campus-wide information technology infrastructure and for the coordination of campus-wide information technology services not under the direct control of the Office of Information Technology. Brings major information technology issues before the Information Technology Board, including policy proposals, new initiatives and strategic plans. Advises the senior officers on information technology issues, and serves as a resource to Academic Senate committees with responsibilities in this area. Represents UCSB on system-wide and other external information technology committees. Provides general direction for the Associate Director, who manages the operations and staff of the Office of Information Technology.

The Director is a full time UCSB faculty member with a 50% time administrative appointment. The Director receives release time from teaching to carry out the administrative responsibilities of her/his office, and also receives an administrative stipend.

The Office of Information Technology is responsible for campus-wide information technology planning and leadership. It has operational responsibility for the campus information technology infrastructure including the inter- and intra-building wiring plant, the voice and video networks, two-way radio systems, the data backbone network, the campus modem pool, and the off-campus telephone and internet connections. It has responsibility for providing campus-wide networking services such as the administration of the ucsb.edu internet domain, domain names services, and the management of the campus web-server. The Office of Information Technology plays the leading role in dealing with network security issues. It acts as a coordination point for other units that provide campus-wide information technology services, and reviews their annual information technology plans. It plays a major role in forming and supporting campus-wide information technology committees. The Office of Information Technology has a staff of approximately 40 and an annual budget of approximately $8.0M.
