Re: Computer Networking Policy Committee

I would like to appoint you to serve as a member on the Computer Networking Planning and Policy Committee for the remainder of 1993-94 and for 1994-95. This Committee is charged with advising the Execultive Vice Chancellor on policies, priorities, objectives and plans for data communications and networking. Professor Robert Sugar will chair the Committee. Among the matters which the Committee should address are:

  1. The establishment and operation of a campus backbone network operating on the recently installed fiber optics cable, which will serve the growing needs of research, instruction and administration on a long term basis.
  2. The administration of the ucsb.edu Internet domain, the campus's connection to the Internet, and the campus's relation to the National Supercomputer Centers.
  3. Outreach to the Santa Barbara community to facilitate use of the Internet by local industry, business, educational institutions, and the general public.
  4. Planning for innovative uses of networking for research, instruction and innovation.

My office will contact you to set up the first meeting. I hope that you will be able to serve on this important Committee and if you cannot, please contact my office as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
