Action Items from Last Meeting (September 11, 1997)
Elise distributed reports from Steve Francis's Fiber Allocation data that
showed the availability of fiber around campus. According to Steve's
numbers, there didn't appear to be any bottlenecks.
RFI responses were distributed from Cabletron, Cisco, and 3Com. At
first glance, none of those vendors currently do all of the required
standards.
We discussed three options based on our current investigations:
- Do nothing until roughly Q2'98 when standards-based QoS functionality
was available.
- Buy some inexpensive "disposable" equipment that could increase our
bandwidth, but wouldn't address QoS.
- Form a partnership with some company to work with their existing
equipment and functionality and work towards standards-based QoS.
In order to do ATM QoS, you need to have ATM QoS end-to-end.
We discussed the fact that it was difficult to make any decision without knowing what
was happening at the intercampus backbone level and what the other campuses
were doing. It was decided that we should send a query to ucatm-tech@ucsb.edu,
cenic-tpg@ucdavis.edu, Susan Estrada, and UCCSC@uci.edu [our query was sent to
all but UCCSC EMM 9/30/97]. We wanted to verify that our interpretation of
the CalREN-2 project requirements and the current technical situation was
accurate. We wanted to see what other campuses were doing. And finally we
wanted to see if there was an opportunity to coordinate working with vendors
with other campuses.
Action Items for Next Meeting: October 15, 1997
- Elise and Kevin Barron would draft a note to send out to the relevant
mailing lists regarding QoS implmentation.
- Everyone was to get a copy of each RFI and read them.
