Action Items from Last Meeting (August 28, 1997)
Kevin Schmidt was able to contact the Gartner Group. First of all
he wanted to validate our list of ATM specifications that were required
for QoS. Yes, we need MPOA, LANEv2, UNI 4.0 Signalling, and NHRP. He
asked who was doing it, and the answer was nobody really, but we should
check out Newbridge, Fore, Cisco and Lucent. The primary vendors supporting
voice and video over ATM are Stratacom/Cisco, Nortel, and Lucent. Gartner
Group did say that the best cross-platform management tool was from Stanford
Telecom, but it still wasn't as good as using the hardware vendor's management
platform. Ed Mehlschau noted that one of the criticisms of Quality of Service
was that QoS wasn't needed if you properly sized your network.
Finalize ATM Requirements List
The list of ATM requirements developed by Kevin Schmidt and Elise was reviewed.
The final version
was sent to vendors. The group also identified the
key questions that we definitely wanted vendors to answer if they were
unwilling to answer the entire list.
Vendor Assignments and Additional Vendors to Survey
- Steve Francis: IBM & Xylan
- Elise: Bay
- Kevin Schmidt: Cisco & NEC
- Kevin Barron: Fore
- Nathan: 3Com
- Stephen: Newbridge
- Ben: Lucent/Agile Networks (or Kevin Schmidt)
- Larry: Cabletron (or Elise)
- Ed: Alcatel Data Networks/Alcatel Network Systems
Action Items for Next Meeting: September 25, 1997
- Elise would draft a note to send out with our list of ATM questions. Once
that was complete, everyone would send out the RFI to their vendors.
- Steve Francis would provide the Fiber Ring Allocation information.
