C2IG Meeting Minutes January 9, 1998

Attendees: Kevin Barron, Steve Francis, Roger Lenard, Elise Meyer, Kevin Schmidt, Jason Simpson, Mark Schildhauer and Rob Bootsma

Unable to Attend: Nathan Freitas, Ben Humphrey, Jim Frew, Larry Murdock, Stephen Pope, Rich Prohaska, Vince Sefcik, and Ed Mehlschau

Analysis of Cabletron, Cisco, IBM and Xylan RFI Responses

Elise updated the group on information that Larry had found out about Cabletron's routing capabilities. Larry says that Cabletron has a cooperative agreement with Yago systems which involves chip level routing. They would like to do a non-disclosure with us. The MMAC+ doesn't support OSPF (and they have no plans to either), but it does support SecureFast which can do 750,000 pps switched. They said that we could use the current campus Cisco 7000 series routers for routing. Larry recommended that we have presentations by at least 3 vendors, and that we specify that their design allow for growth.

Steve Francis said that IBM plans to integrate frame into their ATM switch, but they haven't been able to give us pricing on ethernet components yet. They offerred to let us use an edge switch with one OC-3 uplink per 100BaseFX connection until their ATM switch could do both.

We discussed that each product had some deficiencies:

  • Cabletron: No real routing in their equipment
  • Cisco: Routing Speeds – currently only 250,000 pps
  • IBM: No frame interfaces (100 or 1000) in their ATM switch.
  • Xylan: Routing Speeds – currently only 250,000 pps

Elise mentioned that she ran the numbers on one vendor's solution to see if we were still in the ballpark with our budget. Potential costs are:

  • 2 FSBs: ~ $92,000 (including tax)
  • Fiber backbone augmentation: $36,000
  • Fiber jumpering from FSB's to research groups: $5,000

There was a suggestion that the research groups might be willing or able to help pay for either the cost of the fiber jumpering from their equipment to the FSBs, and/or the cost of their interfaces in the FSB. Some research groups had been presented with this possibility and some had only been told to pay for their equipment.

Next Step

We discussed that we wanted the remaining vendors to come out and give us a presentation where they designed a solution for our environment, and gave us a competitive analysis of their product vs. their competition. We would then use all of this information to either draft an RFP or to do a sole source. Elise said that she would check with Bob Bisho about our plans and concerns.

Action Items for Next Meeting: January 15, 1998
  1. Elise will discuss our strategy with Bob Bisho.
  2. Steve Francis will develop the specifications for the vendor designs. Here's his draft.
  3. Elise will rewrite the Fiber request document so that it can be submitted to the CNC via the BEG as a networking funding request.
