Design: Configuration Options

Here are the two configurations that we are currently considering. Please note that the numbers within parentheses indicate the number of buildings passed through to get from the switch to the research group.

Configuration 1

One switch: one switch in North Hall, but Ring 2 must be split with multimode fiber between North Hall and Physics/Noble (Comm Svcs proposed location).

We need a quote on the cost to split Ring 2.

The switch in North Hall has the following configuration:

• 1 OC-12 SMF interface connecting to the CENIC ATM switch in Public Safety.
• 1 OC-3 or Full Duplex Fast Ethernet and either MMF or SMF to connect to commgw router (Public Safety).
• 9 OC-3 or Full Duplex Fast Ethernet MMF interfaces to connect up:
• Library (Alexandria & FOIRL connection to Girvetz)
• Library (Arts)
• Ellison (ICESS)
• Music (NGNM)
• ITP
• Broida (HEP)
• Engr I (Superweb)
• Engr I (Multimedia)
• Engr I (Alexandria)

Configuration 2

Two switches: one switch in North Hall, one switch in Engr II, connected via GTE's SMF.

We still need to find out if we can use that fiber, and we need a quote on the work required to splice, run, and terminate it so that we can actually use it.

The switch in North Hall has the following configuration:

• 1 OC-12 SMF interface connecting to the CENIC ATM switch in Public Safety.
• 1 OC-3 or Full Duplex Fast Ethernet and either MMF or SMF to connect to commgw router (Public Safety).
• 4 OC-3 or Full Duplex Fast Ethernet MMF interfaces to connect up:
• Library (Alexandria & FOIRL connection to Girvetz)
• Library (Arts)
• Ellison (ICESS)
• Music (NGNM)
• 1 OC-12 or Gigabit SMF interface connecting to the second backbone switch in Engr II.

• 1 OC-12 or Gigabit SMF interface connecting to the first backbone switch in North Hall.
• 5 OC-3 or Full Duplex Fast Ethernet MMF interfaces to connect up:
• ITP
• Broida (HEP)
• Engr I (Superweb)
• Engr I (Multimedia)
• Engr I (Alexandria)
