Another comment that came up recently was about providing native ATM services as part of CalREN-2. We have always stated that "IP is the common bearer service and ATM might be available on an experimental basis." I think this position is very important to maintain. The common good is served by IP and that is the cost we are sharing. Anything else is temporary, as available. Here is one financial model to consider: suppose some pair of researchers want a 310 Mb/s VC between them, what should CalREN-2 charge them for this? I think they should pay for half the cost of an OC-12 plus some overhead for equipment, network management, etc. Representing a fair share of the CalREN-2 costs but still less than a separate carrier service. Remember folks, this ain't free and it ain't cheap. David
